One year into Gulshan terror attack

The nation is recalling on Saturday the ghastly terror attack on an eatery in Dhaka’s Gulshan with a fresh vow to stamp out militancy from the country forever.

The attack at Holey Artisan Bakery, an upscale cafe on Road 79 of Gulshan-2, that some local media described as 7/16 (seven/sixteen) tarnished the reputation to some extents, but the way the law enforcement agencies controlled the overall situation with efficiency with less causalities and damage gained worldwide appreciation.

As many as 30 people -- including 22 foreigners, two police officers, five attackers and one bakery staff -- were killed in the incident from 9:20pm on July 1, 2016, and ended early next morning after the operation 'Thunderbolt' conducted by a team of the 1st Para-commando Battalion of Bangladesh Army, with the help of the members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTCU), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police headquarter sources said.

The assailants equipped with crude bombs, machetes and pistols, took several dozen hostages (foreigners and locals) on that fateful night. The attackers shot dead two police officers who in the immediate response tried to regain control of the bakery and subsequently the others were killed by the assailants while five gunmen were killed in the drive.

"The drive against militants attack on Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery was a turning point as the people of all classes with the help of law enforcement agencies stepped up anti-terrorism and militancy campaign nationwide with very significant and tangible outcome," security and strategic analyst Major General (retd) Abdur Rashid said on Friday on the eve of the one year into the worst terrorist attack in the country, according to BSS.
