An individual declared fugitive by the court will not be allowed to contest the next national elections to be held in February next year, Election Commissioner (EC) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said on Wednesday.
He also said a candidate might lose his office even after getting elected if it is found that he provided false information in the affidavit before the polls.
The commissioner said these while briefing reporters about the EC's proposal of amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) at the EC headquarters in the city's Agargaon area.
The EC's set of proposals was sent to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Tuesday for the next course of actions such as vetting and approval by the Advisory Council of the interim government.
According to the proposals, a candidate will have contest election with the symbol of his own party though he competes under the banner of an alliance.
The 'no' vote is only applicable to single-candidate seats.
"From now on, if there is a single candidate anywhere, he will not be declared the winner directly. He will have to face 'No' vote," the commissioner said.
Also a candidate can spend a maximum of Tk 10 per voter in a constituency or up to Tk 2.5 million--whichever is the highest. The presiding officers of the polling centres concerned will have the full authority for conducting votes.
"He will decide whether to continue or stop the voting," said the EC.
All provisions related to Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) have been abolished, he added.
