The High Court on Thursday granted bail to expelled Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim, popularly known as G K Shamim, in a case filed over amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 2.97 billion.

The High Court bench of Justice A S M Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Mahmud Hassan Talukder delivered the verdict after hearing a rule issued regarding his bail.

Senior Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for G K Shamim during the hearing of the petition, while Senior Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said that ACC will file an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC bail order. Lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoqe said, his client cannot get released from jail as he has been convicted in other cases.

The ACC filed the case against G K Shamim, a top government-listed contractor, and his mother on October 21, 2019 on charge of accumulating illegal wealth worth Tk 2.97 billion.

A charge sheet was submitted against the duo in the case to a Dhaka Court on January 17 in 2021. The court framed charge against them on October 18 in 2022.

Earlier on December 13 in 2023 the same HC bench granted bail to G K Shamim in an arms case in which he received life imprisonment by a special tribunal. However, the HC decision regarding the arms case is now pending before the apex court's full bench.

Rapid Action Battalion members on September 20 of 2019 arrested Shamim and his seven bodyguards on charges of extortion and tender manipulation. A total of four cases were filed against him on charges of arms, drugs, money laundering and amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.

Lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque said his client got conviction in two cases filed under the arms act and money laundering act, and recently he secured bail from the HC in two cases filed under the arms act and amassing wealth beyond known source of income.
