Customs officials at Dhaka airport apprehended a woman named Rekha Parveen, arriving from Dubai, on Wednesday morning with gold bars and ornaments weighing over eight kilograms, a local media outlet reports.
Farhana Begum, Assistant Director of the Customs and Intelligence Division, confirmed the matter.
Acting on a tip-off, customs officials at the airport took immediate precautionary measures concerning the passengers of an Emirates flight on Tuesday (yesterday).
Later, upon further examination, the total weight of the recovered gold was 8217 grams. The estimated market value of the seized gold is taka 65.7 million.
The seized gold bars are currently being deposited in the Customs House. A legal case has been filed against the passenger at the airport police station.
