Activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad set fire to and vandalised the Jatiya Party headquarters in the capital's Kakrail area as fresh political tensions gripped Dhaka on Saturday.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to control the situation.

The attack took place around 6:30 pm. Earlier, at around 6:15 pm, leaders and activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad staged a protest march to the Jatiya Party office.

The party's leaders and activists staged the march to protest against the attack on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the party and former VP of DUCSU. At the end of the protest march, bricks and stones were thrown at the police.

The police first tried to create a security cordon. But they broke through it and entered the place. Later, the police chased them. The police fired blank shots in front of the Jatiya Party office to bring the situation under control. As a result, the attackers dispersed, according to the witnesses.

Earlier, Gono Odhikar Parishad party leaders and activists held a protest rally in front of their central office at Bijoy Nagar on Saturday afternoon to protest the attack on the party president and former VP of DUCSU, Nurul Haque Nur, and demanded punishment to those involved.

Later, they staged a demonstration. The demonstration passed through Purana Paltan, National Press Club, Matsya Bhaban and Kakrail areas before reaching Bijoy Nagar through Nightingale intersection.

Activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad blocked roads and burned tires, prompting heavy police deployment in key areas.

A protest march was brought out in the Bijoynagar area around 3:45 pm on the day, where more than three hundred Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists set fire to tires and chanted slogans. Some political parties, including the Gono Odhikar Parishad, claim that the Jatiya Party played an accomplice role in legitimising the fascist regime. Like the Awami League, the activities of the Jatiya Party should also be banned.

Earlier, Gono Odhikar Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur, who was injured in an attack by law enforcement agencies in the capital's Kakrail, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday night. He was taken to the ICU after 12:30 am on Friday (August 29).
