Govt employees resume protest at Secretariat

Government employees at the Bangladesh Secretariat resumed their protests on Monday to demand immediate repeal of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance 2025.

They held processions and a rally at the heart of government administration at around 11:30am to press home their demand.

The agitating employees also vowed to continue their protests until their demand is met.

The aggrieved government employees launched protest following issuance of Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance on May 25, 2025, which allows dismissal of public servants for administrative disruptions within 14 days and without departmental proceedings.

Their agitation remained suspended following the Eid-ul-Azha and weekly holidays.

Before Eid-ul-Azha the government formed a committee led by Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul to review the ordinance.

The committee held its first meeting on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Monday that there is scope to review the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance 2025.

He made the remarks while talking to the media men at his secretariat after a meeting with the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.

"I was abroad and was not directly involved in the formulation of this ordinance. When I later reviewed it, I felt that it certainly deserves reconsideration," he said.

Asif, however, urged the agitating employees to refrain from continuing their protests until the committee submits its report. The adviser observed that the government did not enact the ordinance with any ill intention.

But, some of the provisions in the ordinance may be revised, he mentioned.

He said that the committee will submit a report to the Advisory Council as soon as possible. Our responsibility is to provide recommendations or a report -- we are not the decision-making authority.
