Operation of the entire 20.1-kilometre metro rail known as Mass Rapid Transit line 6 will begin after the inauguration of its Agargaon-Motijheel segment by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on October 20.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate work on another 20km metro rail from Hemayetpur of Savar to Bhatara, known as MRT 5 North, through a groundbreaking ceremony on September 16.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader disclosed this at a press conference at the conference room of the Road Transport and Highways Division on Sunday.
He said marking both the inaugurations, two citizens' rallies at Suhrawardi Udyan and in Savar will be held on the respective days in presence of the Prime Minister.
Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd has been operating MRT 6 from Uttara to Agargaon since December 29 last year.
With trial basis operation, its timing has been increased from 8am to 8pm touching all nine stations in between the first 11.7 km line.
The MRT 6 will now have over 1.0 km line from Motijheel to Kamlapur to be completed by 2025 as it is extended part of the line.
Mr Obaidul Quader said of the total 20km line of MRT 5 North, 13.5 km stretch will be underground and 6.5-km stretch elevated sections.
Apart from the two important events, the premier will also inaugurate 140 bridges, 12 overpasses and one vehicle inspection centre virtually from the Sarak Bhaban in the capital.
Mr Obaidul Quader also said the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Dhaka Elevated Expressway on the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport-Farmgate route on September 2 and the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, an underwater expressway tunnel, under the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram on October 28.
During inauguration of the expressway, a citizens' rally will be held at old trade fair venue at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital at 3:00pm, he added.
Meanwhile, toll rates for the airport-Farmgate section of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway (DEE) have been fixed ranging Tk 80 to Tk 400.
The Road Transport and Bridges Minister disclosed the newly-fixed toll rates - divided into four categories.
No three-wheeler vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles and pedestrians will be allowed to ply the expressway.
BSS adds: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader at a press briefing said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate a compensation programme on October 22 for those killed and injured in road accidents.
"Each family of those killed in road accidents will get Tk0.5 million as compensation while each person who lost limbs will get compensation of Tk0.3 million," he said.
Among others, Road Transport and Highways Division secretary ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Bridges Division secretary Md Monjur Hossain, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder, and Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited managing director MAN Siddique were present.
