Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said the government is not aware of the imposition of 15 per cent VAT on metro rail fares from July.
"Suddenly, who announced that VAT will be increased from July. We know nothing about it,” he said.
“We will discuss this with the Prime Minister. Metrorail is a special service of public transport. People are benefiting from it. July is still far away. And we have not made any decision on this,” Quader said.
He said this at the Eid gift distribution ceremony, organised by Bangladesh Awami Matsyajibi League at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka on Friday.
On Thursday, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued an order stating that they are imposing a 15 per cent VAT on Metrorail fare from July 1, which has remained exempted since December 28, 2022.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Abdur Rauf, Company Secretary of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), on Thursday told a news media that they will try to halt the NBR’s decision.
He said, "We will try our best to halt the decision. We shall take this to the highest level while there is still time."
