Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said that the government is not worried about further US sanctions or restrictions.
“Forget it; we are not worried about sanctions. We do not care about whether restrictions are imposed or not” he said when asked to comment on a media report predicting sanctions against the police.
Talking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka city, the minister also criticised the way foreign diplomats are interfering in the domestic affairs of the country.
When asked to comment on the remarks of US envoy Peter Haas about political dialogue, the foreign minister said some foreigners are acting like members of political parties.
“I have often said these foreigners should form a political party, get registered with the EC, and contest in the election. Let’s see how many people vote for them” he quipped, referring to the US envoy's suggestion that the political parties should sit in unconditional dialogue to resolve the present political impasse.
Referring to the incidents that took place on October 20, Momen said he expected that the leadership of the BNP would express regret through a public statement and expel those involved in the atrocities on that day.
He further emphasised that the attacks on the residence of the chief justice and the killing of police were unimaginable because the police and judiciary do not belong to any political parties.
Responding to another question, the minister said that BNP’s activities are aimed at tarnishing the global image of the country.
He pointed out that the country has achieved significant economic progress in the last 15 years, but now opposition parties are trying to undermine the achievement.
No sensible party that loves Bangladesh again can be involved in such activities, the minister said, adding that it is as if they are living in a colony, not in an independent country.
