The government is planning to open helplines for Bangladeshis living in Iran and Iraq in its missions in case the ongoing conflict between Iran and Iraq escalates further, concerned officials of the foreign ministry told the FE on Sunday.
The decision may come up by Monday, an official said, adding that already the missions in the two countries have been asked to send their assessments in this regard.
So far no report has been received about any casualties of Bangladeshi citizens in Iran, he added. Though the number of Bangladeshis in Iran is less than 2000, in neighbouring Iraq, it is around 50,000, officials said.
It may be mentioned that Bangladesh unequivocally expresses its strong condemnation and deep concern over the latest Israeli military attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
"This blatant act of hostility constitutes a clear violation of United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law and the sovereignty of Iran. It poses a serious threat to regional and global peace and security with far reaching consequences" said a statement of the foreign ministry issued recently.
Bangladesh also called upon all parties to exercise utmost restraint and refrain from any actions that may further escalate tensions in an already volatile region.
Bangladesh urged the United Nations and the international community to act collectively in support of a stable Middle East, underscoring that diplomacy and mutual respect remain the only viable path to lasting peace.
