The government has stayed the sentence awarded to Md Shahedul Huq, a businessman, in a corruption case.
A notification, issued recently by the Ministry of Home, said it has stayed the sentence of Mr Shahedul for one year without any condition, considering his application, so that he can file an appeal against the verdict.
The ministry considered his application in line with the Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 - after taking opinion from the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, also said the notification.
The Special Judge's Court no-8 in Dhaka convicted him in 2023 in a corruption case. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed it on the charge of amassing Tk 326.16 million beyond known source of income. The court sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk 0.1 million.
The court also ordered confiscating Tk 652.32 million, which is a double amount of the disputed money, amassed by Shahedul Haque.
It has been claimed that the Anti-Corruption Commission failed to bring any allegation against Mr Shahedul regarding his illegal source of income and involvement with any casino, tender or extortion activities.
