Govt to build 152 more cyclone centres

The government has planned to construct 152 new cyclone shelter centres in the country’s coastal and cyclone-prone areas.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said this in the parliament on Thurday.

“On April 24, 2008, the Planning Commission instructed the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry to construct 1,072 cyclone shelter centres in the country,” he said while replying a starred question placed by ruling party lawmaker Nasimul Alam Chowdhury (Cumilla-8) in the Jatiya Sangsad.

Enamur said the government has already constructed 100 multipurpose cyclone shelter centres in the coastal and cyclone-prone areas in the first phase.

He informed the House that 220 more cyclone shelter centres are being constructed in the second phase.

The minister said the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry has a plan to build 752 more multipurpose cyclone shelter centres in the next phases.

Responding to another starred question placed by lawmaker Shahe Alam (Barishal-2), he said the government has also planned to set up necessary cyclone centres in the coastal areas of Barishal, reports BSS.
