Govt to scrutinise Myanmar's global trade ties amid refugee crisis

In a move to bolster data-driven policymaking, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has asked the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) to compile and submit a comprehensive report on Myanmar's trade relations with Bangladesh and other major global economies.

An official said MoFA recently requested the data be provided immediately.

The directive follows a decision taken at the 48th meeting of the National Task Force (NTF) on Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs), held on January 8.

The MoC has been tasked with detailing Myanmar's import and export volumes, categorised by country and product type.

Beyond bilateral trade with Bangladesh, the report will analyse Myanmar's economic footprint in other major countries to provide a clearer picture of its global economic standing.

The data will be presented at the next NTF meeting to support high-level decision-making on the ongoing refugee situation.

A senior commerce ministry official said MoFA has sought information including country names; import volumes (in million or billion US$) with product lists; and export volumes (in million or billion US$) with product lists, to ensure consistency in data collection.

The move comes as Bangladesh continues to grapple with the complex socio-political and economic challenges stemming from the Rohingya refugee crisis.

By analysing Myanmar's trade, the task force aims to better understand the economic levers at play in the region.
