Govt undertaking steps to increase efficiency of services: Speakers

The government is taking several innovative steps for improving the lives of citizen, and simultaneously increasing the efficiency, transparency and accountability of the delivered services.

The initiatives include scaling up electronic government procurement, electronic land mutation, strengthening the Union Digital Centres and the Village Court system.

The speakers came up with the observations on Sunday at a workshop titled ‘Innovations in Public Service Delivery’ organised by the Copenhagen Consensus Center and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD).

They also discussed the key challenges of upscaling the aforementioned four initiatives and the way forward.

Planning Minister Mr. MA Mannan was present as the chief guest at the event with Executive Director of BIGD Dr. Imran Matin in the chair.

Lawmaker Nahim Razzaq attended as the special guest at the function while former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman was present as a special commentator.

Speaking on the occasion, the planning minister emphasised the need for data for better government decision making and appreciated the research done by BIGD for informing policy.

 Lawmaker Nahim Razzaq emphasised the importance of citizen’s engagement in monitoring the quality of public work, so the government should take it seriously.

“This will increase the effectiveness of e-procurement” said Razzaq adding that e-Government Procurement can be linked with taxation for better tracking of income.

 Atiur Rahman pointed out that Bangladesh has two important dividends: 80 million young population and density dividend, that makes many service and infrastructure scalable.

He also said that digital culture will be crucial in maximise the dividend, as it directly connects public service providers with citizen.

“It provides them with a mechanism for providing direct feedback”.

Ms. Rasheda K Choudhury, Executive Director, CAMPE, Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, PD, a2i, Ishtiaque Siddique, Senior Procurement Specialist, World Bank, Sarder M. Assaduzzaman, UNDP provided expert opinion on the issues presented.

Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman discussed the relevance of issues to our current development context.
