The government felt that the law enforcement agencies have failed to take proper steps to stop violent incidents that took place in the city when rival groups of students attacked each other.

Two advisers of the government who were key leaders of the July movement, however, pointed out that if the police took steps to stop violent students in their traditional riot management method, there could be further escalation of the situation.

“We wanted to avert any untoward incident like clash between students and the police, Adviser Asif Mahmud told a press briefing on Monday”.

He was flanked by Information Adviser Nahid Islam and Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Responding to a question as to why no attempt was made to manage the situation before it went out of control, Asif said the tension between the students of Molla College and National Medical College was under observation for several days and efforts were on to stop any kind of violent move through discussion over telephone.

He mentioned that though there was social media rumours that 10 people were killed during the student clash, the government has no confirmation of the information.

Several people were, however, seriously injured, he said.

The advisor said that police used to lob tear gas and fire rubber bullets to quell students but now the government want to change the riot management system. “However it will take time,” he noted.

Asif said the government is going to appoint nearly 1,400 sub-inspector and 4,500 constables in the police as part of the overhauling of the force.

Responding to a question, Nahid said there might be a blueprint devised by several quarters at home and abroad to create anarchic situation in the country as the elements of the previous fascist government are carrying on vicious and baseless campaign on the social media.

He also mentioned that a group tried to assemble huge people in the city by offering them handsome amount of credit but the police foiled the move and the convener of the platform was taken to police custody.

Responding to a question Shafiqul said ISKCON leader Chinmoy KrishnaDas was arrested in connection with a case filed against him with the Kotowali Police Station.
