A concert in the port city of Chattogram turned violent on Saturday night after chants of “Joy Bangla” reportedly sparked clashes and gunfire, local media said.

One person, 23-year-old Md Sharif, was shot and seriously wounded. He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment, according to the reports.

The incident took place around 8:30 pm at a convention centre near GEC intersection. It was not immediately clear who opened fire or who was involved. Another person was also injured but not identified.

Videos on social media showed a group trying to vandalise the main gate of the venue while security forces fired into the air to control the situation.

The concert, organised by a motorcycle company and open to the public, was set to feature rock band Artcell. It was cancelled after violence erupted between two groups, and police were later deployed to the site.

A witness named Md Naim, who took the injured man to hospital, said the clashes began when some attendees shouted “Joy Bangla.”

He said the chanters were linked to the Chhatra League, and members of the Chhatra Dal protested, leading to a heated confrontation before police opened fire.

Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder at CMCH Police Outpost confirmed one gunshot victim was admitted but said those with him were not giving clear details.

Chattogram City Chhatra Dal convener Saiful Alam said the trouble started when a group began chanting slogans associated with the Awami League.

He said he visited the hospital after hearing of several injuries.

Khulshi Police Station officer-in-charge Shahinur Zaman said officers were questioning witnesses and collecting information.

Senior officials were at the scene, and organisers of the event had been called to the police station for questioning, he added.
