Gunmen fire on BGB in Teknaf before fleeing to Myanmar

A group of “suspicious individuals” has reportedly opened fire on Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf before fleeing across the border into Myanmar.

The BGB later recovered several weapons and ammunition from the scene, which it believes were stockpiled for potential terrorist activities or sabotage, reports bdnews24.com.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Kharer Dwip area of Hnila Union in Teknaf, according to Lt Col Mohammad Jashim Uddin, commander of Ukhia 64 BGB.

“During a special operation on the river in the Kharer Dwip area, the BGB detected the presence of some suspicious individuals,” Jashim said.

“But as soon as they saw the BGB troopers, they fired a few rounds and fled inside Myanmar by boat.”

He added that a search of the area led to the recovery of two G-3 rifles, one MA-1 (variant MK 2) rifle, one LM-16 rifle, eight magazines, and a total of 507 rounds of ammunition.

“The recovered weapons were brought into Bangladesh through the border area by smugglers or terrorist groups,” the BGB official said.

“It is believed that they were stockpiled for the purpose of terrorist activities, drug and arms smuggling or sabotage.”

He said intelligence operations were being intensified to identify the source of the weapons and the people involved.

The weapons and ammunition have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station, Jashim said, adding that legal proceedings had been initiated and operations were continuing to track those responsible.
