The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has strengthened security measures in the border areas of Sherpur and Mymensingh following the shooting of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency and convenor of Inqilab Mancha.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Saturday afternoon by Lt Col Mehedi Hasan, commander of the Mymensingh BGB-39 Battalion.

Hadi was shot in front of the Bijoynagar water tank in the capital on Friday afternoon.

According to police and witness accounts, he was travelling in a moving rickshaw when an assailant sitting on the back of a motorcycle opened fire, with the bullet hitting him in the head.

He is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital, where his condition has been described as critical.

The press statement said surveillance has been intensified along several border routes and key locations in Sherpur and Mymensingh districts following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the BGB headquarters.

To prevent any suspect involved in the attack from fleeing across the border, the BGB has deployed additional special patrols alongside regular operations.

Check posts have also been set up at strategic points, while search operations are being conducted in the border areas.

Through these patrols and check post activities, overall surveillance in the border region has been strengthened, the movement of suspicious individuals is being monitored, infiltration is being prevented and security measures have been consolidated, the statement said.

It added that surveillance activities are also being carried out with the cooperation of local residents living in border areas.

The BGB authorities have sought cooperation from the media in this regard.

Mehedi Hasan said the BGB is performing its duties with utmost caution and professionalism to protect the borders of Mymensingh and Sherpur districts.

“All necessary measures are being taken in coordination with the local administration and other law enforcing agencies to ensure the country’s sovereignty and border security,” he said, adding that such security operations would continue considering the prevailing situation.
