Hamiduzzaman Khan, an illustrious sculptor and artist, has died at the age of 79.

He passed away at 10:07am on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka's United Hospital, according to his wife and painter Ivy Zaman.

Hamiduzzaman was admitted to the hospital on Jul 15 and had been in intensive care for three days, she said. He had been battling dengue and pneumonia.

“The doctors have informed us that his heart and kidneys are in good condition. We are hopeful that once the pneumonia is under control, he will be moved from the ICU to a regular bed,” she had said at the time.

A medical board, formed on Thursday, had been monitoring Hamiduzzaman’s condition, she added. However, he could not be saved.

His body may be taken to Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts from the hospital, Ivy said.

"We are in contact with his family. The time for bringing him to the faculty has not been finalised yet. Once the family informs us, we will notify everyone," said Azharul Islam, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University.

Hamiduzzaman has worked extensively with watercolours, oil paints, acrylics, and sketches, alongside his work as a sculptor.

Born on Mar 16, 1946, at Sahashram village in Kishoreganj, he graduated with a degree in fine arts from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts, now the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, in 1967 and joined the institution as a teacher in 1970.

Most of his sculptures are inspired by the Liberation War.

"Jagrotobangla" at the Fertiliser Factory in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, "Sangsaptak" at Jahangirnagar University, "Bijoy Keton" at Dhaka Cantonment, "Unity" at the Bangladesh Bank premises in Motijheel, "Freedom" at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh premises, "Swadhinata Chironton" at the Bangladesh Open University, "Mrityunjayee" at the Government Services Commission premises in Agargaon, "Ebarer Sangram Muktir Sangram" in Madaripur are some of Hamiduzzaman notable outdoor sculptures.

He has been featured in 47 solo exhibitions. Hamiduzzaman received the Ekushey Padak for his contribution to art in 2006. He was elected a Bangla Academy Fellow in 2022.
