The High Court (HC) has questioned the legality of indiscriminate drives conducted by different government agencies in hotels and restaurants in the capital.

Issuing a rule it wanted to know form the government bodies concerned to explain as to why they should not be directed to allow the business of the restaurant owners who carry on their functions in accordance with law and with all required documents.

The HC bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order after hearing a petition filed in this regard.

The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) and other bodies concerned have been asked to comply with the rule.

Bangladesh Restaurant Owners' Association (BROA) filed the writ petition on March 11, challenging the legality of indiscriminate drives in their business establishments.

The drives against non-compliant buildings came shortly after the Bailey Road building fire that left 46 people dead on February 29. Lawyer Ahsanul Karim who stood for the petitioner said, "The government bodies are harassing the owners of the restaurants in the name of inspection. It is a serious damage to the restaurant job holders as well as government revenue."
