The High Court today (Monday) directed the authorities concerned to submit a list of courts across the country which still have iron cages within the next four weeks.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury passed the order.
The High Court said any civilized society by any law doesn't support this (iron cages) as it is a violation of human rights.
Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir argued for the petitioner in the court, while Deputy Attorney General Md. Tanmi Khan appeared for the state.
The state has informed the High Court that iron cages have already been removed from some courts.
Ten lawyers of the Supreme Court have filed this petition for the removal of iron cages in the lower courtrooms.
The lawyers are: GM Mujahidur Rahman, Mohammad Noab Ali, Saddam Hossain, Abdullah Sadik, Mizanul Haque, Mujahidul Islam, Mesbah Uddin, Md. Jobaidul Islam, Azim Uddin Patwari, and Sajjad Sarwar.
After hearing this petition, the High Court issued a rule directing the authorities concerned to submit the list of courtrooms having iron cages across the country.
The High Court, in its rule, has asked to explain why an order shall not be announced to reinstate the accused box instead of iron cage.
Furthermore, the rule has also asked to know why the installation of iron cage shall not conflict with Articles 31, 32 and 35 of the Constitution.
