Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam has remarked that echoes of 1/11 are once again being heard in the country.

He made the statement in a Facebook post at around 6:40 pm on Monday.

His post has drawn a variety of reactions and has led to widespread speculation about the political future of Bangladesh.

The term ‘1/11’ is a reference to January 11, 2007, when a state of emergency was declared in the country. This came in the wake of intense political violence stemming from a dispute over who would head the caretaker government responsible for overseeing the national elections.

On that day, in response to the demands of the Awami League and its allied parties, then-President Iajuddin Ahmed stepped down from the post of Chief Adviser and declared a state of emergency. He also cancelled the general election that was scheduled for 22 January.

Following these developments, a military-backed caretaker government assumed power, led by former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed. At the time, General Moeen Uddin Ahmed was serving as the Chief of Army Staff.
