Heat wave in all districts may continue for three more days

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast that the ongoing heat wave will persist for another three days.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque told bdnews24.com, “The temperature is very high in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barisal. All the divisions are experiencing heat waves. It will continue for three more days.”

On May 7, the Met Office had warned of a heat wave over Sirajganj district and Khulna Division. The mild heat wave is expected to spread further.

On Thursday, the country’s highest temperature of 39.2°C was recorded in Chuadanga. The highest temperature in Dhaka was 38°C.

A temperature of 36°C to 38°C is classified as a mild heat wave, 38°C to 40°C as moderate, 40°C to 42°C as severe, and anything above 42°C is termed a very severe heat wave.

The regular weather bulletin said there may be temporary gusty winds with lightning or rain, accompanied by thundershowers in a few places in Sylhet division in the next 24 hours from 9am on Thursday.

Elsewhere in the country, the sky is partly cloudy and the weather is likely to remain mostly dry.

THUNDERSTORM WARNING IN THREE DISTRICTS

The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning in three coastal districts.

A warning said that from 4:40pm on Thursday, rain or thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds with speeds of 45 to 60km per hour or more may occur over Barishal, Bhola, and Noakhali districts in the next one to two hours.

The BMD has given various advice, including staying indoors in case of thunderstorms. They are-

• Keep windows and doors closed.

• Avoid travelling if possible.

• Take shelter in a safe place.

• Do not take shelter under trees.

• Do not sleep on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.

• Unplug electrical and electronic devices.

• Get out of water bodies immediately.

• Stay away from electrically conductive objects.

• Stay indoors during hailstorms.
