A low-pressure area has formed over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions.

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions for the 72 hours from 5pm on Thursday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Rainfall between 44-88mm over a 24-hour period is considered heavy, while rainfall exceeding 88mm is classified as very heavy.

Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir said there is a possibility of landslides in the hilly areas of the Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar districts due to the very heavy rain.

In addition, parts of the Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram metropolitan areas may experience temporary waterlogging due to the downpours.

He also mentioned that the low-pressure area is likely to intensify further.

Under its impact, a steep pressure gradient is prevailing over the northern Bay of Bengal.

Gusty or squally weather may affect the maritime ports, the north bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh.

The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3.

The Met Office has also advised fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay to come close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
