Heavy rain likely to continue for next five days

Rain is likely to persist over the next few days in different parts of the country with the sustained influence of the monsoon winds, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has said.

In a bulletin issued on Sunday, the Met Office forecasted "heavy to very heavy" rainfall in certain regions, bdnews24.com reports. 

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque indicated that monsoon winds from the southwest are actively affecting all of Bangladesh, particularly strong in the east, moderately active in the northern Bay of Bengal, and fairly active elsewhere throughout the country.

Due to these conditions, light to moderate rain, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, lightning, and thunderstorms, is expected in several divisions over the next 24 hours.

Affected areas include Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet, as well as parts of Rajshahi and Khulna. Moderate to heavy and very heavy rains may occur in some areas, with daytime and nighttime temperatures likely remaining stable.

Also, moderate to heavy and very heavy rain may occur in some parts of the country, while day and night temperatures are likely to remain unchanged.

Over the next 24 hours, starting from Monday morning, light to moderate rain with temporary gusty and squally winds, lightning and thunderstorms are expected in many places of Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions and some parts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna divisions. Besides, some parts of the Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience moderate to heavy and very heavy rain, while day and night temperatures may slightly rise.

According to the forecast from Tuesday morning, along with occasional gusty winds with lightning, and light to moderate rain, thundershowers may occur at many places in Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, some places in Dhaka and Barisal divisions and one or two places in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions for the next 24 hours. Additionally, moderate to heavy rain may occur at some places in Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. The day and night temperatures may increase slightly across the country on Tuesday.

Occasional gusty winds with lightning, light to moderate rain, and thundershowers at some places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and one or two places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chattogram divisions are likely in the 24 hours from Wednesday morning. Besides, moderate to heavy rain may occur in some parts of the country, while day and night temperatures are likely to remain unchanged.

On Thursday, one or two places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience occasional gusty winds with lightning, light to moderate rain, and thundershowers. The day and night temperatures may remain almost unchanged across the country on Thursday, according to the Met Office.

The BMD said there could be a slight rise in the temperature towards the end of the day.

Citing a forecast issued on Saturday, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) Executive Engineer Sardar Uday Raihan said the water levels of the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Balai, Someshwari and Manu rivers of Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions may rise over the next two days, potentially crossing danger level.

During this period, there is a risk of flood situation in the low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Moulvibazar districts.

The water levels of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are currently stable and flowing below the danger level. The water level of these rivers may rise in the next five days but may flow below the danger level.

The water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are on the rise, which is likely to continue for the next two days. However, it may decrease by the next day and may flow below the danger level.

The waters of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur division may swell over the next three days, but the waters of Teesta may flow within the warning limit.

The water levels of the Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri rivers in the Chattogram division may stay steady over the next 24 hours, though it is predicted to go down in the next 2 days.

The waters Ganges and Padma rivers went down, but may rise over the next five days and are unlikely to reach dangerous levels.
