RANGPUR, Mar 28: An excellent yield of pumpkin is likely to be achieved across the district during the current season due to a congenial weather and timely supply of agri-inputs.
Visiting different areas under the region, this FE correspondent found the growers taking care of their sweet pumpkin fields. Some were found busy harvesting their produces.
This year farmers of the district made vigorous efforts with the hope to get expected output as well as handsome profit from the sale of the vegetable.
According to sources, pumpkin growers in the district have been getting satisfactory output of their produce for the last several years which encouraged them to enhance its cultivation across the region.
Aminul, a grower of sweet pumpkin at Char Nazirdaho village in Kawnia upazila said he prefers farming vegetables due to high profit in comparison with many other crops.
He cultivated sweet pumpkin on 30 decimals of land this season. During the last few years he has been getting an excellent yield as well as handsome profit from farming of the vegetable, he said.
Tofael, another grower of village Char Mahipur in Gangachara upazila said a good number of farmers of his area are showing their interest in the farming of sweet pumpkin than the cultivation of other crops owing to huge profit.
He has cultivated it on 40 decimals of land this season and is optimistic about a plentiful production, he also said.
Besides, sweet pumpkin is being cultivated in many areas under the region using eco-friendly pheromone trap instead of pesticides. Gradually, such method is getting popular among the peasants, sources said.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said satisfactory prices as well as demand have encouraged the cultivators to cultivate the vegetable on a large scale.
DAE is giving the growers necessary advice in this regard so that they can get good yield of vegetables including sweet pumpkin, sources added.
