Police on Wednesday arrested the domestic help, Ayesha, a prime suspect in the Mohammadpur double-murder case, from Nalchity of Jhalakhati district.

The arrestee, identified as Ayesha, confessed to her involvement in the killings during questioning, police said

Police recovered six bhoris of gold, a laptop, and a mobile phone from her possession.

A sharp knife used in the crime was also recovered.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Police of Mohammadpur zone Jewel Rana said Ayesha had been arrested around midday from Jhalakathi's Nalchity upazila, where her in-laws' house was located.

She was being brought to Dhaka and further details would be shared later, he said, adding that her husband Rabiul Islam had also been arrested.

A nine-member police team arrested them from Koiar Char village of Nalchity.

Officer-in-Charge of Nalchity Police Station Ashraf Ali said police had used modern technology and secret information to arrest Ayesha.

He said Ayesha was in hiding in her grandfather-in-law's house in Nalchity.

Ayesha's husband Rabiul said she planned to steal valuables and sell those to get some money.

He said Ayesha had stabbed housewife Laila Afroze as the victim saw her stealing.

When Laila's daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz had also approached, Ayesha also stabbed her, he said.

On Monday, Laila and Nafisa were hacked to death in their apartment on the seventh floor of a building on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur.

Laila suffered around 30 stab wounds, and Nafisa endured at least six, according to police and morgue officials.

The victims were mostly stabbed in their throats and necks, officials at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital morgue said after completing the autopsies.

Ayesha fled after the killings.

Law enforcers struggled to trace her as she had left almost no digital footprint.

She had not provided her original name and actual address to her employer, making the investigation challenging.

Her face was not captured clearly by the building's CCTV cameras as she always wore a burqa.

Different agencies, including the Rapid Action Battalion and detectives, were hunting for her.

Quoting police sources, ADC Jewel said Ayesha had committed theft in a house in Mohammadpur's Beriband area six months ago.
