A woman who suffered severe burns in a gas explosion that engulfed her family’s home in Chandpur has passed away.
Five other members of her family are currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
The explosion, which occurred early Sunday during Sehri, the pre-dawn meal before fasting in Ramadan, was triggered by a gas leak in the family’s home in the Koralia neighbourhood of Chandpur.
The victim, Khadija Akhter, 32, tried to light a stove when the accumulated gas ignited, leading to a sudden blast as fire broke out, said Mahmudul Hasan Jibon, a relative of the family.
She died five days later on Friday while receiving treatment.
Khadija leaves behind her husband, Imam Hossain Sardar, 40, and their two children, Maimuna Akhter Muna, 8, and Maidul Islam Khalid, 3.
Others hospitalised include Imam, and his parents, Abdur Rahman Sardar, 70, and Shahanur Begum, 60, as well as his younger brother Mohin, 18-year-old identified by a single name, and his sister-in-law Nipa Akhter, 26.
“The others have become even sicker after hearing about Khadija’s death,” Jibon said.
