An examinee of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) allegedly committed suicide after writing the wrong registration number in her exam paper in Tazumuddin upazila of Bhola district on Tuesday.

The deceased, Tonu Chandra Das (18), was a science student at Tazumuddin Women’s College and had been participating in this year’s HSC examinations.

Tonu was the only daughter of schoolteacher Bitish Chandra Das and homemaker Ujwala Rani Das.

The incident occurred at Shayyestakandi village in Chandpur Union of the upazila.

According to her mother, Ujwala Rani, Tonu returned home on Monday after appearing for her Biology First Paper exam and seemed anxious and unsettled. She feared she had incorrectly written her registration number, which led her to deep distress.

Despite family members’ efforts to console her, Tonu reportedly consumed pesticide—kept at home for use in betel leaf cultivation—around 9:00 pm.

Hearing her screams, the family rushed to her room and immediately took her to Tazumuddin Upazila Health Complex. Later, she was shifted to Bhola Sadar Hospital, but the duty doctors declared her dead upon arrival around 12:30 am.

Md. Mohabbat Khan, officer-in-charge of Tazumuddin Police Station, said, "Preliminary investigation suggests that she consumed poison out of frustration after writing the wrong registration number in her exam paper. The matter is being looked into further."
