A huge amount of essential commodities has already arrived at Chittagong Port ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, with more shipments in the pipeline.
Additionally, a substantial quantity of food items are waiting at the outer anchorage and at sea to be unloaded onto lighterage ships, ruling out the possibility of market instability by creating food shortage this year, sources said.
According to Chittagong Customs, the process of importing goods begins at least three months before the Ramadan and this time is no exception. Millions of dollars worth of LCs have been issued to import necessaries.
Talking to the FE, businessmen of Khatunganj said that there is no need to worry about goods in Ramadan, as a lot of products are now in stock.
Chairman of BSM Group Abul Bashar Chowdhury said there is no shortage of products on the market while prices are also falling now.
Assistant General Secretary of Chaktai-Khatunganj Trade Association Rezaul Karim Azad said the supply of products except oil is completely normal and the market is completely stable.
Sources said the interim government plans to import 700,000 MT rice. The import of rice from India and Myanmar is underway.
Traffic and Conservation Controller of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Gnanpriya Bidurshi Chakma said, "Ships carrying rice from India and Myanmar reached Chittagong Port. As part of the G2G programme to import rice from Myanmar, the consignments are arriving at Chittagong port."
Executive Director of Bangladesh Water Transport Co-ordination Cell (BWTCC) GM Khan, also a retired major, said that a lot of consumer goods have been imported. "644,863 MT peas and pulses and 70,897 MT sugar have already been unloaded from the mother vessel since last December. Besides, the cargo ships are staying at the outer anchorage of the port."
