The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has taken cognisance of three charges of crimes against humanity, accusing Mahbub Ul Islam Hanif, joint general secretary of the ousted Awami League, and three others of attempting to suppress the July Uprising.

The ICT also ordered the suspects to be arrested and brought before the court on Oct 14, reports bdnews24.com.

The bench led by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury decided on Monday.

The three other suspects in the case are Kushtia district council Chairman and local Awami League President Sadar Uddin Khan, the party’s Kushtia General Secretary Asghar Ali, and Sadar Upazila council Chairman Ataur Rahman Ata.

The charges were officially filed against the four suspects with the ICT on Sunday.

One of the charges against Hanif is over his support of a statement by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. Hanif was present at a press conference in which Quader stated that the Chhatra League “was sufficient response” to the July Uprising protesters.

Another charge accuses him of holding a meeting at the Awami League’s Kushtia office on Jul 19 to conspire the suppression of the protests.

The third charge accuses him of involvement in the murders of six people in Kushtia town.
