The work on removing chemical warehouses from the old part of Dhaka city should start right now, Inspector General of Police Javed Patwary has said.

Police will also have a role in this, but, prior to that, all the relevant authorities, including the environment department and city corporation, need to first take the relocation decision, he said on Thursday morning.

The IGP made the remarks while visiting Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka, where at least 70 people died in a fire started from around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, around 8:00am.

The deadly Chalkbazar fire has the similarities to the 2010 Nimtali one that claimed more than 100 lives. Both the fires spread to the extremes due to flammable chemicals.
