Incidents of child rape across the country marked an alarming rise from January to May 14 this year, according to a report by a children rights body.

The incidents of such appalling crime are higher than any period in the past, the report revealed. 

It also disclosed that on an average two children were raped every day during the aforementioned period, and in the last 14 days of this month (May), more than 60 children were raped.

Apart from this, at least 153 children were killed, 346 minor girls fell victim to rape and 68 committed suicide from January to May 14 this year.

Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF) revealed the report at a kick-off meeting on ‘Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights’ at the National Parliament’s IDP conference hall in the city on Wednesday.

Deputy speaker of the parliament Fazle Rabbi Miah was present at the function as the chief guest with BSAF Chairperson Dr Khawja Shamsul Huda in the chair.

BSAF organised the meeting in support with UNDP and Global March Against Child Labour.

15 Members of Parliaments (MPs), among others, participated in the event.

BSAF director Abdus Shahid Mahmood moderated the programme.
