Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy has said he expects India would ensure that national elections are held in Bangladesh within the constitutional timeframe of 90 days.
In an interview with The Indian Express, he said “I would hope India would ensure that elections are held within the constitutional timeframe of 90 days, that the mob rule is stopped and that the Awami League is allowed to campaign and reorganise.”
Joy, who was the ICT adviser to his mother, expressed the conviction that if the Awami League could campaign properly “we will win the election… We still remain the most popular party.”
In the interview published on Wednesday (August 14), he admitted that mistakes were made in handling the student protests.
“The government should have engaged with the protesters from the very beginning and spoken out against the quotas much earlier,” he said.
Joy’s mother Sheikh Hasina fled to India amid fierce anti-government movement spearheaded by quota protesters.
