Information and Broadcasting Advisor Nahid Islam has urged the media and journalists to offer constructive criticism of the government.

He emphasised the importance of responsible journalism while speaking in a meeting with leaders of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

“A false news rumour can lead to major incidents. So, we expect a responsible role from the media and journalists,” he said.

Nahid pointed out that the interim government is not a party-based one and lacks its own propaganda machinery, relying instead on the media.

“We do not have our own workforce or media to promote the government’s activities. Therefore, we seek the cooperation of the media,” he added.

He also expressed his belief that impartial journalism provides significant support to the government by offering crucial information.

Reflecting on the role of the media over the past 16 years, he said: “It should be clear who took a stand against the people. If anyone made a mistake or became a victim of circumstances, they should admit their mistakes and apologise to the public.”

He added that reconciliation can only be achieved by acknowledging the truth, emphasising that switching positions post-Aug 5 should not happen.

On the issue of the journalists’ wage board, Nahid said different stakeholders, including editors, owners, and reporters, often hold differing views.

“Everyone must come together to resolve this issue,” he said.

Nahid also highlighted the challenges in changing the administrative system.

“In the last 16 years, we had one system in place, and transitioning to a stable system will take time,” he said, referring to the changes in police deployments between metropolitan areas and villages.

“They will take time to adjust,” he added.

Regarding law and order, Nahid acknowledged that changes are coming.

“We are in a post-revolutionary phase, and during such times, changes in law and order occur. However, it will take some time to establish stability. Police will definitely be strict, but we expect them not to act as oppressors,” he said.
