Jatin Sarker, left-wing intellectual and Independence Award-winning writer, dies at 89

Jatin Sarker - a progressive left-wing intellectual, Independence Award-winning writer, and teacher – has died at the age of 89.

He passed away while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital at 2:45pm on Wednesday, according to Emdadul Haque Millat, president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh District committee.

Jatin had been suffering from various complications due to advanced age for a long time. In June, he fell and injured his thigh bone, bdnews24.com reports. 

He was then taken to Dhaka for treatment. Last week, he was taken back to Mymensingh and was continuing his treatment there.

Jatin was the president of the Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi central committee for two terms.

His body will be taken to the Mymensingh unit of Udichi for people to pay their respects.

Details regarding the last rites have yet to be confirmed, Emdadul said.
