On the final day of campaigning for Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) panel on Sunday took an oath at a gathering, pledging to fight against the culture of guestroom torture and ganoroom oppression on campus.
In line with the electoral code of conduct, all forms of campaigning will remain banned from today (Monday), before the election on September 9.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at 1:30 PM at the Bot Tola of Dhaka University. The event was led by vice president (VP) candidate Abidul Islam Khan, with all hall and central panel candidates in attendance.
The programme began with a rendition of the national anthem by Chemon Faria Islam Meghla, the panel's candidate for Common Room, Reading Room and Cafeteria Affairs Secretary.
During the oath, candidates placed their hands on their chests and made solemn pledges to the students. They declared, "We will never allow the return of the disgraceful practices that flourished under fascist rule-gonorooms, guestroom torture, forced participation in political programmes, and the persecution of dissenting voices. Our commitment is to build a joyful, livable, and safe campus for every student."
They further recalled moments of resistance in Bangladesh's political history: "Just as we stood unarmed before guns in July 2024, just as our seniors led the anti-autocracy movement of 1990, the Liberation War of 1971, the Language Movement of 1952, and the Partition struggles of 1947-we too will rise against any dark force that threatens democracy, independence, or sovereignty in the future."
