The government on Friday evening gave assurance to meet the demand of agitating students and faculties of Jagannath University (JnU) after they had demonstrated for more than 50 hours.
University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor SMA Faiz confirmed this to newsmen.
He said the government was sympathetic to the students' just demand.
Necessary steps were taken for smooth running of the university and the welfare of the students, he added.
The government's response came after the agitating students of JnU began hunger strike on Friday to press home their four-point demand including housing stipend.
On Friday afternoon students began the hunger strike following observation of a one-minute silence to protest against the police attack on teachers and students at the beginning.
They also threatened to besiege the office of the Detective Branch (DB) if a fellow student, detained over a bottle-throwing incident involving Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam, is not released.
Addressing the demonstrators, General Secretary of JnU Teachers Association Prof Rois Uddin said that they had no way to retreat from their position until fulfilment of their demand.
He said historically JU is being neglected and deprived for long time.
He said that for this reason all the teachers and students were united to realise their demand.
"Our demand must be realised. We have reached such a point that we don't have any way to retreat. So we want cooperation from all," he said.
