Protesting students of Jagannath University have threatened to besiege the office of the Detective Branch (DB) if a fellow student, detained over a bottle-throwing incident involving Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam, is not released.
The warning was issued on Friday afternoon by Jagannath University Chhatra Dal member secretary Shamsul Arefin during a sit-in demonstration at the Kakrail intersection.
He said the student must be released within two hours, otherwise protesters would march to the DB office.
“A minor incident involving a bottle is being exaggerated, while no action has been taken against those who attacked our university students,” Arefin said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night when Adviser Mahfuj Alam visited protesting students at Kakrail. During the exchange, a plastic bottle was thrown and struck him on the head. He left the location shortly afterward.
According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, video footage of the incident was reviewed, and a student was detained.
In a brief message, the DB confirmed that the student was taken to its Minto Road office for questioning. Authorities said he will be handed over to his guardian after the interrogation is complete.
