Initial results from 18 polling centres in the Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) elections show a neck-and-neck battle for several top positions.

Candidates from the Oikkoboddho Nirbhik Jobian panel, backed by Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, are leading for the VP post, while the Odommo Jobian Oikko panel, supported by Islami Chhatra Shibir, holds the lead for the general secretary and assistant general secretary positions, bdnews24.com reports.

At 7:30am on Wednesday, three members of the Election Commission initially announced the results for four centres, followed shortly by results from a further three.

By midday, the commission had declared the figures for four more centres, and by the afternoon, results from an additional seven centres were released.

According to the partial results, AKM Rakib of the Oikkoboddho Nirbhik Jobian panel is leading the VP race with 2,154 votes, narrowly ahead of Riazul Islam of the Odommo Jobian Oikko panel, who has 2,129 votes.

The Odommo Jobian Oikya panel’s Abdul Alim Arif is far ahead in the general secretary race with 2,364 votes, with his closest competitor Khadijatul Kubra of the Oikyabodhha Nirbhik Jobian panel with 1,030 votes.

Odommo Jobian Oikya’s Masud Rana leads the AGS race with 2,088 votes, but Oikyaboddha Nirbhik Jobian’s Atiqul Islam Tanzil is close behind with 1,819 votes.

Final results from 20 central union polling centres and the student council for the university’s single residential hall are still pending.
