Veteran journalist and former president of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), the late Abdus Shahid, remained steadfast in his commitment to democracy and press freedom throughout his life, said speakers at a memorial meeting marking his fourth death anniversary.
The event, organised by DUJ, was held on Sunday morning at Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club.
The meeting was chaired by DUJ President Md Shahidul Islam and moderated by DUJ General Secretary Khurshid Alam.
Speakers remembered Abdus Shahid as a fearless and principled journalist who consistently advocated for the rights of journalists and upheld ethical journalism.
Journalist leaders said that Shahid was also deeply concerned about the livelihood and professional security of journalists, and often raised his voice on their behalf.
The memorial began with special prayers for the eternal peace of Abdus Shahid and veteran journalist and Daily Naya Diganta editor Alamgir Mohiuddin, who passed away on Saturday.
BFUJ Secretary General Quader Gani Chowdhury said journalist Shahid was a pioneer of honest and courageous journalism who stood firm against injustice and irregularities.
"He never compromised on the issues of the country's independence and sovereignty," he said, urging young journalists to follow his example in upholding ethics and values.
Chowdhury also lamented the current state of journalism, saying that divisions caused by political influence have weakened journalistic integrity. "As a result, the legacy left by journalists like Abdus Shahid is not being maintained today," he added.
Mostafa Kamal Majumder, former editor of The New Nation, recalled journalist Shahid's fearless stance in the face of adversity.
He said Shahid was imprisoned, dismissed from jobs, but he never wavered in revealing the truth.
"His uncompromising role in defending freedom of expression should serve as a guiding light for the new generation," he said.
DUJ President Md Shahidul Islam mentioned that Shahid's work went beyond personal gain.
He dedicated himself to public welfare, often sacrificing his own interests. His life was a testament to honesty and unwavering commitment, he said.
DUJ General Secretary Khurshid Alam described Shahid as a true nationalist and an exemplary journalist.
Journalist Shahid was responsible, dedicated, and bold. As a forum leader, he never hesitated to speak the truth, he said.
