A journalist passed away while covering the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election at Curzon Hall on Tuesday (September 9).
The deceased was identified as Tariqul Shibli (40), a city reporter for the online television channel Channel S.
According to witnesses, Shibli was live on air inside Curzon Hall during election coverage when he suddenly collapsed around 1:30 pm. Colleagues immediately rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
His colleague Sohel Rana said, “He was broadcasting live when he fainted. We quickly took him to DMCH, but the doctors could not save him.”
Police confirmed the incident. Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue and the local police station has been informed. Doctors initially suspect cardiac arrest as the cause of death, though the exact reason will be known after the autopsy report.
Shibli’s ancestral home is in Burichang upazila of Cumilla district. He lived in Dhour, Uttara’s Diabari area, with his family. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
