Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Dr Nazmul Karim Khan has revealed that journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin was killed after recording a video of a fraudulent ‘honeytrap’ incident.

The police commissioner, speaking at a press briefing held today (Saturday), stated that a man named Badsha Mia was returning home after withdrawing Tk 25,000 from a bank when a woman identified as Golapi allegedly attempted to trap him in a ‘honeytrap’ scheme.

Sensing the ploy, Badsha got into a heated argument with Golapi and tried to push her away.

At that moment, other suspects who were Golapi’s associates attacked Badsha with sharp weapons.

As Badsha ran to save his life, journalist Tuhin, who was present on duty, filmed the incident, the commissioner said.

Meanwhile, the attackers saw Tuhin documenting their crime and ordered him to delete the video.

When he refused, they attacked him with sharp weapons, killing him before fleeing the scene, according to the commissioner.

“We have identified eight individuals from CCTV footage. Seven are now in custody, and we are confident the remaining suspect will be arrested soon,” the GMP commissioner stated.

At the briefing, commissioner Nazmul said that crime prevention is not possible by the police alone; it requires public involvement.

“The responsibility for security lies with me. We generally focus on two tasks — prevention and detection. In this case, we failed in prevention, but prevention is not always possible. No country in the world has been able to bring crime down to zero. Despite our best efforts, crimes can still occur. We express our regret over this incident,” he stated.

The commissioner added that the charge sheet would be filed within 15 days of receiving the post-mortem report.

He assured that the trial would be completed as quickly as possible to ensure the maximum punishment for the perpetrators.
