After a 33-year hiatus, the stage for Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election is now finally ready, with 182 candidates, including 45 women, contesting 25 executive posts.

Female candidates are in the race for a significant number of both reserved seats and general positions, although none is running for vice-president (VP).

For the general secretary (GS) post, two women are in the spotlight. Syeda Onnanya Faria from the Department of Law and Justice is an independent candidate, while Tanjila Hossain Boishakhi from the Department of Government and Politics represents the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) panel.

"After a long time, JUCSU elections have reinvigorated the campus politics. Students are actively participating, and our engagements show widespread support. We aim to ensure a fair and transparent process across the university," said Tanjila Hossain Boishakhi.

Other key positions women are vying for include joint general secretary, education and research secretary, assistant cultural secretary and assistant sports secretary.

"Almost half of JU's students are female, yet many lack a platform to voice their concerns. I want to represent them and work towards an inclusive and vibrant campus," said Ayesha Siddika Meghla, running for reserved joint general secretary from the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel.

The long-awaited polls have transformed the Savar campus into a hub of student engagement. From classrooms and faculty entrances to Murad Chattar and residential halls, candidates are busy presenting manifestos, rallying supporters, and trying to persuade students to vote for them. Colourful posters, slogans, and open discussions have created an atmosphere which many describe as a "festival of democracy."

As the election campaign intensifies, students and candidates are urging the administration to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
