July Uprising murder cases to be tried at Speedy Trial Tribunal, special panel to oversee prosecution

The cases filed on charges of murder committed on the orders of the Awami League government to suppress the student-led mass movement during the July Uprising, excluding cases pending in the International Crimes Tribunal, will be tried by the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
In addition, a special committee will work to streamline and speed up the prosecution of cases filed on charges of murder and other serious crimes.
The Ministry of Law stated the matter on Monday, reports bdnews24.com.
A total of 837 cases have been registered over incidents that occurred against students and the public nationwide on the orders of the then Awami League government during the July Uprising. Of these, 45 cases are being tried in the International Crimes Tribunal. In addition, the police have already submitted charge sheets in 19 murder cases to various criminal courts in the country.
The decision has been made to send these murder cases to the Speedy Trial Tribunal for trial in accordance with the provisions of Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2000.
In addition, the Ministry of Law has formed a committee headed by the additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division to streamline and accelerate the prosecution of cases filed on charges of murder and other serious crimes.
The panel is tasked with the following duties:
1. The committee will collect a complete list of cases filed on charges of murder and other serious crimes committed during the July Uprising to suppress the nationwide student-led protests.
2. In the cases where charge sheets have been filed, the committee shall identify the existing problems (if any) in the conduct of prosecution activities (excluding cases pending before the International Criminal Tribunal) and shall send necessary recommendations to the government to resolve the problems.
3. The committee shall inform the families of the victims and their countrymen about its activities from time to time.
