Awami League-backed mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has won the Rajshahi City Corporation election with a huge margin, according to unofficial results.
The incumbent mayor bagged 160,290 votes in the election defeating his nearest rival Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Md Murshid Alam by a whopping 146,807 votes.
Rajshahi City Corporation elections Returning Officer Delowar Hossain announced the results after counting of votes ended at all 155 polling centres.
Murshid Alam, the Islami Andolon candidate with “handfan” symbol got 13,483 votes. He rejected the results.
Among other candidates, Saiful Islam Swapan from the Jatiya Party got 10,272 votes and Jaker Party’s Latif Anwar bagged 11,713 votes.
Voting for Rajshahi City Corporation election began at 8:00 am on Wednesday and continued till 4:00 pm. The total number of voters in this city election was 351,982.
Delowar Hossain said 52 per cent of voters casted their ballots today.
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used in all the 155 polling stations. As many as 1,560 closed circuit (CC) cameras were installed at the polling stations.
Members of the Election Commission, including the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), monitored the election through CCTV cameras.
