Former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is now able to receive medical treatment, and her condition remains stable, her personal physician and BNP Standing Committee member Professor Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Thursday.

He shared the update during a briefing in front of the hospital on Thursday afternoon, according to local media reports.

Khaleda Zia has been suffering from multiple chronic and complex health conditions for a long time, including liver and kidney complications, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis and infection-related illnesses.

She was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on November 23 after experiencing worsening breathing problems, cough and fever while at home. Medical examinations later revealed severe deterioration in her lungs, heart and kidneys, prompting her transfer to the Critical Care Unit.

Doctors diagnosed her with acute pancreatitis on November 27, and treatment is ongoing. She is also receiving strong antibiotics and antifungal medicines for severe infections. Regular dialysis, blood transfusions and specialised cardiac treatment are continuing under close supervision by a multidisciplinary medical team.
