BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the physical condition of the party chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was 'very critical'. She now remains admitted at a hospital.
"Last night, doctors said her condition is extremely critical," Mr Fakhrul told journalists after a prayer gathering for her recovery at Nayapaltan Jame Mosque on Friday.
Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was also present. BNP arranged special prayers in mosques across the country for Begum Zia's recovery.
At the mosque, Mirza Fakhrul said, "Khaleda Zia has made the biggest contribution to democratic progress. She fought for democracy, struggled, went to jail, and faced torture. Recently she was in the hospital due to illness. For the last two days, she has again fallen sick and has been admitted to Evercare Hospital. That's why we have asked people across the country to pray for her recovery."
He said, "May Allah heal her and allow her to return to the people and work for the country again."
Leaders and activists of different BNP wings also joined the prayer event at Nayapaltan Mosque.
Nearly 80-year-old Khaleda Zia has long been suffering from heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, kidney complications, and other ailments.
Last Sunday she had breathing problems and was rushed to Evercare Hospital. Doctors later said she has infections in her heart and lungs.
For advanced treatment, she went to London on 7 January and returned to Bangladesh on 6 May after 117 days. Since then, she had to visit the hospital multiple times due to different complications.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Friday expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health condition of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
According to the Chief Adviser's Office, Professor Yunus has been regularly monitoring updates on the former prime minister's medical progress and has directed all authorities concerned to ensure that she receives every necessary form of medical support.
Seeking prayers from the nation for Khaleda Zia's swift recovery, the Chief Adviser said, "There must be no shortcomings in Begum Khaleda Zia's treatment. The government is fully prepared to provide all necessary assistance."
He further stated that Khaleda Zia, a three-time former prime minister, remains "a profound source of inspiration for the nation during this crucial phase of democratic transition," adding that her well-being is of significant importance for the country.
The Chief Adviser also instructed all relevant officials to remain on full alert and ensure complete coordination regarding her treatment and support.
BNP's publicity secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku alleged that Sheikh Hasina, the "fascist killer," had earlier attempted to slowly poison Khaleda Zia while she was in jail.
He said, "She fought for the people of this country and helped establish parliamentary democracy. Today this leader is lying sick in Evercare Hospital."
Tuku also said, "In the past, fascist Sheikh Hasina tortured her unjustly for six years in jail. Our beloved leader went to jail healthy but came out sick. Only Allah knows what was done to her inside the jail."
