Work on the reconstruction of the fire-ravaged Mohammadpur Krishi Market as per existing layout would begin on October 30, Dhaka north city mayor Atiqul Islam said on Monday.
"The rebuilding of this market will kick off on October 30. Following this, you will get space allocation as per your previous possession," he told the traders.
The mayor said the rehabilitation was aimed at helping the traders offset their damage, adding that a planned multi-storey shopping mall would be erected later.
He made the disclosure at a view-exchange meeting with traders at a community centre following a visit to the damaged market on Monday afternoon.
Dhaka-13 lawmaker Md Sadek Khan, Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, DNCC councillor and Mohammadpur Krishi Market Traders Association president Md Salimullah and other stakeholders joined the meeting.
The decision on a multi-storey mall was made in a stakeholder meeting earlier, Mr Islam said, adding: "You will have to cooperate and leave the space while construction will commence."
He also assured shop owners of getting space allocation in the proposed multi-storey facility accordingly.
