The labour and employment ministry has sought the government's intervention to encash its Central Fund (CF) Fixed Deposit Receipts (FDRs) stuck at three crisis-hit banks and one non-bank financial institution (NBFI), sources say.
Labour and Employment Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman requested the finance ministry last month to take steps in this regard.
Currently, Union Bank, Global Islami Bank, ICB Islamic Bank, and Fareast Finance and Investment owe the CF more than Tk 650 million, excluding interests, according to a labour ministry document.
Sources said the FDRs were opened at different times at various branches, including Banani, Nawabpur, Mohakhali, and Karwan Bazar.
CF officials frequently communicated with the three banks and the NBFI by sending formal letters and making phone calls, asking them to return the money, but to no avail.
